Sports Premium

What is the Sports Premium Grant?

The Government has spent over £450 million on improving physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools over the three academic years 2013 to 2014, 2014 to 2015 and 2015 to 2016.

The funding is jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to schools to be spent on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children. All state-maintained schools, academies, middle schools, special schools and pupil referral units which have primary aged pupils (as reported in the 2013 school census) will receive the funding.

This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision for PE and sport in schools. We will be held accountable for how we have used the additional funding to support pupils progress and participation in PE and school sport. We are required to publish on-line information about how we have used the additional funding, including details about our sporting provision alongside curriculum details. This will ensure that parents/carers and others are made fully aware of the PE and sporting provision at Greenhaugh.

Schools can choose how they use the funding, for example to:

  • Hire specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers during PE lessons
  • Support and involve the least active children by running after-school sports clubs and holiday clubs, e.g. the Change4Life clubs
  • Provide resources and training courses in PE and sport for teachers
  • Run sport competitions or increase pupils’ participation in the School Games
  • Run sports activities with other schools
