Class 1

Welcome to Class 1!

In Class 1, we currently have children from Year 2.

We love reading stories in Class 1 and have a daily story time. We use
stories in our English lessons to help us learn new vocabulary, develop
our ideas and use these in our writing. We also have weekly grammar,
spelling and handwriting sessions, giving us the opportunity to practise
new skills and use them in our independent writing.

Spelling and grammar homework is sent home each week alongside the
week’s spellings. Please ensure that this is completed and returned by
the following Monday.

Please read with your child every day and record their reading in the
home/school diary. Your support makes a huge difference to how your
child values books and reading and will have a positive impact on their
learning, not only in reading but across the whole curriculum.

We ensure that our maths learning happens throughout the classroom
as well as during our focused learning sessions. Resources are
available for children to use as and when they need them. We want
maths to be meaningful and linked to the real world, and believe that
hands-on, practical experiences help children to develop their
understanding. We continue to develop our mathematical talk in Class 1
and love to explain what we know, how we know it and why!

In Class 1, children are explicitly taught all areas of the curriculum
(please see our term overview for more details). They also have
opportunities to revisit, practise and extend their learning through
activities provided within our continuous provision. This allows children
to apply what they have learnt, develop their independence and make
links between different areas of their learning.
