At Greenhaugh Primary School, we believe that it is vital for all our pupils to learn from and about religion, so that they can understand the world around them. Through Religious Education, pupils develop their knowledge of the world faiths, and their understanding and awareness of the beliefs, values and traditions of other individuals, societies, communities and cultures. We encourage our pupils to ask questions about the world and to reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences. Our Religious Education curriculum is enhanced further with trips to places of worship in our local area and in the wider community. We use the Agreed Northumberland Religious Education syllabus as the basis for our curriculum.

Implementation:

As part of this planning process, teachers need to plan the following:

• A cycle of lessons for each subject, which carefully plans for progression and depth;
• Opportunities for children to refer back to past learning and answer key questions relating to the key concepts and ideas we want them to retain.
• Challenge questions for pupils to apply their learning in a reflective/philosophical/open manner;
• Trips and visiting experts who will enhance the learning experience.

Impact:

Children will be able to discuss what they know about different religions and also make links between previous learning and new learning. They will be respectful of the beliefs of others and will understand some of the ways that the four main religions are practised in the UK today.
