Intent:
At Greenhaugh Primary School, we want Design and Technology to be an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. We encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. At Greenhaugh, the Design and Technology curriculum combines skills, knowledge, concepts and values to enable children to tackle real problems. We aim to, wherever possible, link work to other disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. The children are encouraged to become innovators and risk-takers.
Implementation:
We follow the National Curriculum to guide our subject content and deliver our topics over a two-year rolling curriculum. Each unit of work is planned taking into account children’s prior knowledge. Our long term plans ensure progression from EYFS to KS2.
Delivery of lessons shows clear following of the design process where each project follows: research, design, make and evaluate. A range of skills will be taught ensuring that children are aware of health and safety issues related to the tasks undertaken.
Independent learning: In design technology children may well be asked to solve problems and develop their learning independently. This allows the children to have ownership over their curriculum and lead their own learning in Design Technology.
Collaborative learning: In design and technology children may well be asked to work as part of a team learning to support and help one another towards a challenging, yet rewarding goal.
Impact:
Our Design and Technology curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. If children are keeping up with the curriculum, they are deemed to be making good or better progress.
In addition, we measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:
- A reflection on standards achieved against the planned outcomes;
- A celebration of learning which demonstrates progression across the school;
- Pupil discussions about their learning; which includes discussion of their thoughts, ideas, processing and evaluations of work.
